The district superintendent of police (SP) spoke after 154 people were injured in the explosion of firecrackers at the Anjuthambalam temple during the Theyyam festival in Kasaragod, Kerala.
According to Superintendent of Police D. Shilpa, firecrackers were kept at the Anjuthambalam temple for two days as the Theyyam festival there lasts for two days.
He says, “The parameters were stored very close to the place where people were gathering. There was no security at this place.”
“154 people were injured in the incident, of which 97 were hospitalised. The health condition of 8 people is critical.
On Monday night, during the Theyyam festival in Kasaragod, Kerala, a large number of people attending the festival were injured when firecrackers burst at the Anjuthambalam temple.
The accident occurred during a fireworks display at the temple when a firecracker shop caught fire.
The injured were shifted to various hospitals in Kasaragod, Kannur and Mangaluru.
Kasaragod Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan said, “There is painful news from Kasaragod – 154 people injured in the incident have been admitted to the hospital.”
He alleged, “Theyyam is a festival of the people of North Malabar and the police did not pay attention to it.”
