Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s You We Can organization has found itself in a controversy over a breast cancer-related advert.
The organization released a breast cancer-related advert on the Delhi Metro, which many social media users raised concerns about.
Following the controversy, Delhi Metro announced that the advert has been removed.
In response to a query from user “You We Can,” it said, “Our aim was to raise awareness about breast cancer through this advert. We did not mean to hurt anyone.”
On Wednesday, October 23, a breast cancer-related advert was put up on the Delhi Metro, comparing breasts to orange breasts.
The advert, which was intended to raise awareness about breast cancer, read, “Check your orange once a month.”
Many users have asked questions on social media about the issue.
On Wednesday, journalist Rituparna Chatterjee shared a picture of the advert pasted on the Delhi Metro on social media platform X.
He wrote, “Yuvraj Singh’s organisation, in response to my query about the ‘Check Your Oranges’ breast cancer advert, called it a bold, creative choice. I disagree with it.”
On the post about the woman being orange, “
“Anyone who looks at this idea will find it insensitive towards women.”
Another user wrote, “Are you in your right mind? Who is responsible for this advert? This is completely insensitive.”
Another user wrote, “Your fight against cancer is inspiring. But please change this advert company. It is not good to compare breasts to oranges.”
The Delhi Metro said the advert was removed at 7:45 PM on Wednesday, October 23.
The Delhi Metro tweeted, “An advert for breast cancer awareness has been placed on a Delhi Metro train. DMRC did not find it appropriate and took immediate action.”
“This ad was sometime seen in the metro on 23rd October 2024 and was removed the same day at 7:45 PM. DMRC is extremely sensitive to public sentiments and does not promote such things.”
Delhi Metro further stated, “This ad was not proper and does not meet the minimum standards for advertising in public places. Delhi Metro will make every effort to ensure that no such ad is aired in the metro in future.”
Yuvraj Singh’s organisation, however, defended the statement in its statement.
In response to a question posed by journalist Rituparna Chatterjee on social media platforms, the organisation said, “We know how difficult it is to talk openly about breast cancer with people.”
“It is a topic that most people avoid talking about unless it involves someone or someone close to them.”
You We Can said, “The use of orange colour in our ad was a bold and carefully considered choice. The goal was to break the silence about breast cancer.”
“We will not use any advertising that might offend you. We think this ad has been so successful that people are talking about it more and more. Our goal is to encourage people to take action that could save lives, and we will continue to work to achieve that goal.”
